BARBARA CONSTANCE SLUTCHUK (née Stratton) MAY 9, 1941 – MARCH 3, 2026

Barbara Constance Slutchuk passed away peacefully. She was born on May 9, 1941, in Carmen, Manitoba to Lena Galbraith and Arthur Stratton.
Barbara was the beloved wife of George Slutchuk, whom she married on March 28, 1971. She is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Rishona Hyman (Hartley Hyman) and Dama Slutchuk (Tom Aldridge), and by her cherished grandchildren, Gregory and Izzie Hyman. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.
Barbara was predeceased by her parents; her second mother, Lyla “Winnie” Stratton; her sisters Mary Beighton (Ted) and Patricia Morton (Robert); and her brothers Keith Stratton, Grant Stratton, John Stratton, Bryan Smith (Eleanor), Lyle Smith, and David (Gail).
Barbara was a trailblazer in nursing. Over her long and dedicated career she managed an emergency department at St. Boniface Hospital, later oversaw the operating room at Seven Oaks Hospital. Eventually moved into Human Resources at Misericordia Hospital.
She had a deep passion for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and attended many games, events, and Grey Cups over the years. Barbara was an avid reader and bridge player. A proud Canadian, she loved football, hockey, curling, figure skating, the theatre, Rainbow Stage, rural Manitoba, and tending to her flower garden. She loved seeing the first robin and geese of the season.
Barbara had a special love for animals, both her own and those belonging to others. She rescued animals and people alike, always making room in both her home and her heart.
Barbara was a natural leader, a volunteer, and an organizer. Above all, her most important role was as a devoted mother and grandmother.
The family is deeply grateful for the compassionate and loving care provided by
Veronica and Lenora, as well as all of Barbara’s caregivers over the years.
A funeral service was held on March 5, 2026, at Shaarey Zedek Synagogue.
Donations in Barbara’s memory may be made to a charity of your choice, Jewish Child and Family Service, or the Winnipeg Humane Society.

RUBEN HELMAN

June 6, 1932 – October 22, 2026

It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Ruben Helman. Surrounded by his family, he passed away peacefully on October 22, 2026, at the age of 94.

Known throughout Winnipeg and around the world simply as “Uncle Rube,” he was the first person people turned to whenever they needed a favour, some help, or just heartfelt advice. Rube was a real people person. He could (and would) make friends with anyone, everywhere he went.

His memory will live on through his wife of 69 years, Rita; his children Mark (Christine), Carla (Michael), and Elaine; his beloved grandchildren Alex, Jane, Miles, Rachael and Zach (Isabelle). He was predeceased by his loving parents Abe and Sarah; sister Paula, and brother-in-law Bill Worb.

Born in Winnipeg, Rube attended Aberdeen and St. John’s High School. After school he started driving the open prairie roads for the Winnipeg Film Exchange and continued travelling for many other companies, including Elgin Watch and Longines. Always looking for new opportunities, he became a distributor for Charles M. Schultz, as well as opening his own companies, L&R Enterprises, R. Helman Ltd., Rumark Video Inc., World Gym and Premier Fitness. Throughout his ventures, his wife Rita was always by his side and his son Mark, and daughter Elaine, also enjoyed the privilege of working together with them.

Rube was always involved in the community through various service organizations, coaching baseball, and as a member of the Chevra Mishnayes and Winnipeg Beach synagogues. He was also a championship bowler, ukulele player and enjoyed singing barbershop whenever he got the chance. He was a guy who loved life and knew how to have fun, and everyone was welcome at “Helmans Hilton” at Winnipeg Beach each summer. There was never a dull moment.

The family also wishes to send a special thank you for all the care given at St. Boniface and Grace Hospitals, as well as the Home Care Workers and staff at River Ridge 1 who took care of him during the last year.

If so desired, Memorial Donations may be made in Rube’s name to the charity of your choice.

MICHAEL STERN

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Michael Stern on October 16, 2026 in Toronto.
He was born on October 31, 1949 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan to Sam and Esther Stern. He grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba before moving to Vancouver, British Columbia and then to Toronto, Ontario.
Michael worked as a leading professional in the home security industry for over 25 years. He pioneered the development of new and innovative products for the companies he worked for.
He also served as a mentor and trainer for people at those companies where his deep knowledge of industry was invaluable in helping orient them in their roles. His leadership helped extend his organizations’ growth across Canada.
Michael was a loving brother to Andrea and Karen Stern and their spouses Isaac Singer and John Michaels. He will be remembered for his sense of humor and playful nature; as a devoted uncle, great uncle and cousin he brought joy to all those who had the privilege of being part of his extended family.
Michael dedicated his life to service to others. For over 10 years he was a Volunteer Coordinator for Huron Carol Food Bank Benefit Concerts which raised over $300,000 for Vancouver and Surrey Food Banks. As a volunteer Big Brother with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Canada and a Head Coach for Little League Baseball, he extended his love to children in need outside of his family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Michael’s memory be made to Cancer Care Manitoba Foundation.
