The evening began with the introduction of four local artists whose work is now on display in the bottom floor of the synagogue. (There are also works by three other artists who were not able to attend.)
The art exhibit was the idea of Amy Karlinsky, following upon the successful exhibition of several of the artists’ work at previous times in the past few years. Amy says that it occurred to her that showing the work of several artists - all at the same time, might be of even greater interest.
Each of the artists who were in attendance spoke about their art: the media in which they work, and the images they have created. The artists present included Shoshana Shalev-Minuk, Elana El, Susan Turner, and Ruth Livingston.
As well, two other artists were represented by relatives - Fernando Figowy by his sister, Debbie; and Leesa Streifler, by her brother-in-law, Hannon Bell. The seventh artist whose work is on exhibit is photographer Keith Levit.
All the works on display are for sale.
Following the opening of the art exhibit, guests headed outside for a beautiful Havdallah service, led by Rabbi Anibal Mass, which was followed by a Selichot service done Kirtan style (a “call and response” style of chanting which emanates from India). As well, the Shaarey Zedek catering staff prepared East Indian desserts for guests. Altogether, over 100 individuals attended all or parts of the evening.
