Bill Mahon

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Bill Mahon, just three weeks after his 85th birthday. Bill was a devoted husband of 59 years to his sweetheart Judy, beloved father to Tracy (Jeff) and Dana (Marc), proud zaidy to Nathan and Jonah, and a loyal friend to countless members of the Winnipeg community, and well beyond.
To know Bill was to adore him. People of all ages and walks of life were touched by his unique sense of humour, his generosity, kindness, and his true zest for life. He was always the first one to say “sure”, “go for it”, and “let’s do it!”
Bill’s happy place was poolside in Puerto Vallarta with his “boat” aka pool floaty. He was famous for slurping the last drop of his chocolate milkshakes, driving around town in his red convertible, and sporting his various Tilley hats.
A true north end boy, Bill grew up on Cathedral Avenue where he and his buddies got into all sorts of trouble. Bill still had weekly dates with many of these same friends, where they’d sit for hours, passing the time telling jokes, sharing stories, and having meaningful conversations.
Bill changed jobs and careers many times over the years, eventually finding his calling as a successful financial planner.
For over 40 years Bill helped countless people, and remained devoted to them, even after he retired, well into his 80’s.
Bill was happiest when surrounded by his family and friends and was always the last to leave a gathering but not before confirming plans for the next.
In November 2024 Bill suffered a traumatic fall. At the time of his accident, he was doing what he loved, hosting friends at their bi-weekly poker game. Bill’s optimism, tenacity and resilience inspired everyone as he fought his hardest to recover. Even amid the most challenging time of his life he was able to shine his bright light and bring levity and joy to those around
ill lived every day with gratitude and appreciation. He was a man of honour, respect, and integrity. He always did the right thing and instilled this in the lives of his children, grandchildren and his community.
He will be forever remembered and profoundly missed.
Bill was predeceased by his parents Emerson and Fanny Mahon, his sister Ethel Planting, and his nephew Paul Planting.
The funeral took place at Etz Chaim Synagogue on Sunday March 16th, 2025.
Pallbearers were:Jeff Kowal, Nathan Kowal, Dana Mahon, Gary Margolis, Don Katz and Shira Tennehouse Honorary pallbearers: David Gruber, Allan Becker, Syd Cohen, Billy Kowall, Ray Leibl, Roberta McEachern, Tino Pissante, Norman Silverberg and Jonah Kowal.
With gratitude, donations can be made in Bill’s name to Spinal Cord Injury Manitoba or CancerCare Manitoba Foundation.

HARVEY APPELLE

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Harvey Appelle, peacefully surrounded with his family, on August 15, 2026, at the age of 86.

Harvey was a cherished, loving and devoted husband, a proud father, an adoring Zaida, and loyal friend. His gentle spirit, generous and kind heart, quiet wisdom, and wonderful sense of humour made everyone around him feel welcome and loved.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife and life partner of 64 years, Faye; his children, Beverley, Rochelle (Martin), and Sheldon (Lorey); his beloved grandchildren, Daniel, Mikaela, Shane and Shawn; and brother, Morry (Christine). He was predeceased by his parents, Bella, Samuel and Pere; and his brother Gerry.

Harvey was born in Winnipeg, on May 8, 1940, to Bella and Samuel Appelle. He grew up in the North End, attended Luxton School and later St. John’s High School. Harvey worked in the lumber and building industries; drafted residential and commercial buildings; and later retired from Sears.

He met the love of his life, Faye Globerman, in 1961 and they married a year later. Together they raised three children.

Harvey was an avid golfer, curler, and bowler, and a dedicated season ticket holder for the Bombers for many years.

He dedicated his life to his family and later he was a dedicated volunteer, giving back to his community by generously giving his time to many organizations, including the Jewish Child and Family Services, WRHA, and events including the 1999 Pan Am Games, and multiple Grey Cups. He also donated blood to the Red Cross for many years.

Harvey will be fondly remembered for his love of family and friends, and for the respect and affection he earned from all who knew him. He was the true definition of a “mensch”.

Those wishing to honour Harvey’s memory may donate to the Jewish Child and Family Services or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of MB.

We are heartbroken and forever grateful for the love and legacy he leaves behind. We will miss him beyond words, love him always, and carry his memory with us forever.

BELLE BURKE MAY 12, 1926 – AUGUST 6, 202

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and friend, Belle Burke, who passed away peacefully after recently celebrating her 100th birthday. Belle lived a remarkable century filled with love, family, friendship, and many wonderful memories. She was a devoted wife to her husband, Matt, and a loving mother to Robert (Marilyn) and Lori (Barry).
Belle was a proud grandmother to Jessica (Daniel), Charles, Shaun (Nicole), Michael (Kristen), and Jay (Sara), and a cherished great-grandmother to Layla, Jake, Bree, Bo, Madeleine, Remy, Devon, Ellis, Wade, and Tessa. Her family was the greatest source of joy and pride throughout her life.
In her early years, Belle attended both Aberdeen and St. John’s High Schools. She was known for her amazing baking, and her delicious creations that were enjoyed by family and friends alike. She also loved playing Bridge and Mahjong, enjoying both the games and, perhaps most importantly, the friendships and laughter that came with them. Belle spent much of her life in Winnipeg before moving to Toronto in 2014. Wherever she lived, she had a special ability to make lasting friendships and touch the lives of those around her. She was warm, caring, and genuinely interested in the people she met, creating friendships that endured through the years.
Belle was predeceased by her parents, Sam and Sarah Fradkin, her brother Aaron, and her beloved husband Matt.
Her memory will live on through her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and the many friends whose lives she touched.
One hundred years of life, love, laughter, family, and friendship — a truly remarkable legacy.
The family would like to extend a very special and heartfelt thank you to Hervie, Belle’s amazing caregiver, who cared for her with extraordinary kindness, compassion, patience, and dedication.
Belle will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Donations can be made to your local food bank or charity of your choice.
