JEAN SHIRLEY KOPSTEIN FEBRUARY 14, 1934 – JANUARY 11, 2026
Jean Shirley Kopstein passed away peacefully, a month shy of her 92nd birthday, with her three devoted children by her side.
Known to her family as Shaney, Jean will be deeply missed by her children, Ivy (Murray), Ruth, and Alan; her grandchildren, Louis, Minnie (Patrick), Leo (Ashley), and Max (Brynne); her great-grandchild, Margot; her brothers, Martin (Grace) and Gary; as well as her nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Jean was born on Valentine’s Day in 1934 in Montreal. In 1939, her family returned to Winnipeg, where they settled in the city’s North End. During her second year at the University of Manitoba, Jean met Bobby Kopstein, the light of her life. They married on June 23, 1954. That same year, Jean graduated as a teacher and taught for three years before choosing to stay home to raise their family.
Later in life, Jean embarked on a meaningful professional career and left her mark on every organization she served. She worked as a counsellor at the Addictions Foundation of Manitoba, became a specialist in adult education and went on to become Director of Staff Development and Training for the provincial Department of Corrections. During that time, she was also seconded by the government to establish the Manitoba Women’s Directorate. She was often described as an inspiration – a wonderful colleague, a thoughtful leader, and a great friend.
Jean had many passions and immersed herself fully in all of them. She loved travelling with Bob and had a deep appreciation for film, music, art, design, fashion, and food from many cultures – always in search of the perfect muffin! She formed deep bonds with family and friends, with constant concern for the well-being of those she loved. Jean and Bob were humanists who led by example, instilling strong values in their family. Jean had a unique and engaging presence. She was outgoing, vivacious, curious, and intelligent. She lit up a room with her energy and her beautiful, warm smile.
Diagnosed with glaucoma in her 60s, Jean began a long and challenging period in her life. After the loss of Bob in 2014, she faced further health difficulties. Despite these challenges, her desire to live fully never waned. She remained interested in the world around her and took great joy in family dinners, trips to Winnipeg Beach, and spending time with family and friends. The family extends heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in Jean’s care over the many years, especially those who went above and beyond. They are deeply grateful to Shaftesbury Park for its support, and in particular to Jean’s caregivers for their outstanding care, compassion, and kindness. The family would also like to express appreciation to the clergy and staff of the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue for their kindness and support. Donations in Jean’s memory may be made to the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba or to a charity of your choice.

BRUCE MILTENBERG
b. October 1st, 1940, d. 9 pm August 31st, 2026 (20th Elul 5786)
Bruce Miltenberg was a true New Yorker, born and reared on the West Side of Manhattan. He came of age in the New York of the 1940s, ‘50s, and ‘60s, and built his life largely through his own initiative, judgment, and persistence. His mother, a Ziegfeld follies girl, supported her two boys as an actress, and insisted they learn Accounting. Bruce attended Stuyvesant High School, Hunters College, became a Licensed CPA, and opened his first tax office in the basement of Berman’s candy store on Broadway (where he’d worked since age 12). During the early ‘60s he did a stint with the U.S. Army Reserve.
Meantime, from that first basement office courtesy the Berman Brothers, Bruce established accounting practices in Flushing, Fort Washington, and at Eighty-First Street on Broadway. By the end of the ‘60s he was buying residential multifamily buildings in Upper Manhattan and the Bronx. Ultimately Bruce closed his tax practice to devote himself to real estate, with holdings eventually in New York, Boston. Philadelphia and Canada.
There was much more to Bruce than his real estate holdings. That was merely the matrix upon which he lived his philosophy of life and nurtured his family. He was an explorer in every sense. He loved ideas, conversation, and a spirited discussion. He often said: “I may not be big enough to push anyone around, but I am too big to be pushed around”. He believed fiercely in independence, courage, and resilience. He encouraged his family to take chances, see the world, stand up for themselves, and meet life’s challenges head on. Bruce was deeply proud of his Jewish heritage and was a lifelong supporter of Israel. He was also extraordinarily generous, often quietly meeting needs and supporting causes without recognition.
In the early 90s Bruce met Cynthia Cohen, of Winnipeg, who was then living in NYC. They married in 1994 at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue, her family’s shule. They began to summer in Winnipeg Beach. As well travelled as he was, (his curiosity took him to some of the world’s most distant places, from Bhutan to Ushuaia), it was Winnipeg Beach—and especially the treasured friends he made there—that became his favourite place in the world. Here is a quote from one of these friends: “Bruce had a way of engaging each and every person who came into his sphere of life. He knew how to reach out to uncover what was important in their lives, while finding new ways to grow himself. He made us laugh, question what’s happening around us and strive to be a better person. Throughout his humour there was an undeniable honesty that we loved and will forever miss.”
Bruce is survived by his wife Cynthia nee Cohen, their daughters Rachel and Leah, his son Andrew (Jennifer), and daughter Alissa Wade (William), his grandchildren Skylar Vertes, Isabel and Jacob Miltenberg, Ava Miltenberg.

HARVEY APPELLE
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Harvey Appelle, peacefully surrounded with his family, on August 15, 2026, at the age of 86.
Harvey was a cherished, loving and devoted husband, a proud father, an adoring Zaida, and loyal friend. His gentle spirit, generous and kind heart, quiet wisdom, and wonderful sense of humour made everyone around him feel welcome and loved.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife and life partner of 64 years, Faye; his children, Beverley, Rochelle (Martin), and Sheldon (Lorey); his beloved grandchildren, Daniel, Mikaela, Shane and Shawn; and brother, Morry (Christine). He was predeceased by his parents, Bella, Samuel and Pere; and his brother Gerry.
Harvey was born in Winnipeg, on May 8, 1940, to Bella and Samuel Appelle. He grew up in the North End, attended Luxton School and later St. John’s High School. Harvey worked in the lumber and building industries; drafted residential and commercial buildings; and later retired from Sears.
He met the love of his life, Faye Globerman, in 1961 and they married a year later. Together they raised three children.
Harvey was an avid golfer, curler, and bowler, and a dedicated season ticket holder for the Bombers for many years.
He dedicated his life to his family and later he was a dedicated volunteer, giving back to his community by generously giving his time to many organizations, including the Jewish Child and Family Services, WRHA, and events including the 1999 Pan Am Games, and multiple Grey Cups. He also donated blood to the Red Cross for many years.
Harvey will be fondly remembered for his love of family and friends, and for the respect and affection he earned from all who knew him. He was the true definition of a “mensch”.
Those wishing to honour Harvey’s memory may donate to the Jewish Child and Family Services or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of MB.
We are heartbroken and forever grateful for the love and legacy he leaves behind. We will miss him beyond words, love him always, and carry his memory with us forever.
