It is with great love and sadness that we announce the passing of Sondra Cohn who died peacefully surrounded by family on Sunday, August 12, 2018 at the age of 83.
She was pre-deceased by Martin Cohn z”l, her husband of 58 years. Sondra will be deeply missed by her loving children, her daughter Susan; her son Lorne and daughter-in-law Miriam; her grandchildren Thomas, Michael, Matthew, Sydney, and Noah; her sister Janice and brother-in-law Frank Kanovsky; her four nephews Howard Lawrence, Bob Cohn, David (Shelly) Kanovsky, Marshall (Alyson) Kanovsky, Richard Kanovsky z”l, and extended family and friends.
Sondra was a kind, friendly, and charitable person, spoken of with great fondness by her family, a wide circle of friends and those she met and worked with on many boards and committees. Sondra volunteered for over 40 years in numerous organizations in our Jewish community and for Israel. She was active in the Hadassah-Wizo organization of Winnipeg, and held many positions from canvassing to co-chairing the Women’s Combined Jewish Appeal (1983-84), to name a few. With her long time partner in community activities, Brownie Fleishman, she received the Max and Molly Shore Award in 2000 and the Women’s Combined Jewish Appeal Award a few years later.
Sondra cherished time with family and was a devoted, considerate, and supportive mother, grandmother, wife, sister, daughter, aunt and friend who built strong, loving relationships. She was born and raised in Winnipeg and loved to travel. She took endless photographs of places and events, sharing memories and warm stories with all.
Sondra will be fondly remembered by her close family, friends and all who knew her.
With very special thanks to Rabbi Anibal Mass, Clare Whiteman, and the Shaarey Zedek staff; to our invaluable caregivers Manilyn Ayson, Ofelia Aguirre, Juliet Daria, and Janet Delorme; George Tuma; and the doctors and staff at the Grace Hospital, for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sondra & Martin Cohn Fund at the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba, phone 204-477-7525.
