Prolific author  Bryan Schwartz has put out five new works within past year

By MYRON LOVE Professor Bryan Schwartz is the very model of a modern-day Jewish Renaissance scholar.  The  popular legal educator, passionate Zionist, and student of the Holocaust as an in-demand commentator on modern legal and constitutional issues has written or contributed to 34 books and over 300 publications in all – in a legal and teaching career that stretches back more than 40 years.  His works encompass legal and governmental issues as well as commentary on the entire gamut of Jewish life – from ancient times to the Holocaust to the current Jewish situation.
In addition to his work as an author, lawyer and academic (as a professor in the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Law), Schwartz is also a poet, playwright, and songwriter.  And his literary output over just the past year reflects the full gamut of his interests and talents.
Since January 2023,  Schwartz has produced five quite different works.  His most recent  work is “It’s About Time:104 Dimensions of Time During Passover” – which readers can download for free on his website –sacredgoof.ca –   is a comprehensive overview of the Pesach holiday from a novel perspective.
In a series of  what used to be called “quick snappers”, Schwartz points out, for example, that Pesach actually combines two ancient Jewish spring festivals – the sacrifice of the first-born lamb and the first fruits of the harvest of the grain that was planted in the late fall or winter.
He groups his explanations and commentaries into  21 categories related to time.  The first group  – Cyclical Time – discusses Pesach’s connection to Purim preceding it and Shavuot seven weeks later.  He further explains Pesach in Israel and why, in Israel, only one seder is designated as compared to two in the diaspora, how the date for the first seder is officially determined, and what the rules are when the seders overlap with Shabbat. 
Other groups include an overview of Pesach’s place in different histories, Pesach within the family context, ritual, the Exodus in world history, Pesach and historical memory, the history of the Haggadah, the bringing together of past, present and future – and many more interesting explanations and fact.
The inspiration for “About Time: 104 Dimensions of Time During Passover”, Schwartz explains in his introduction on his website, came last year at Passover.  “I noticed that the text of the Haggadah contains some explicit references to time,” he noted on his website.
“We begin by thanking the Creator for separating the ordinary days from holy days,” he pointed out. “We are enjoined to tell the Passover story “as if” we were personally redeemed from that captivity. We experience, in the now, the coming together of families and communities…as the Israelites did on the night of Passover. We are invited at the end to proclaim, “next year in Jerusalem” – and with the cup of Elijah, think of a Messianic age beyond the present.”
At first, he wrote, he was aiming to write a single blog piece for The Times of Israel, an Israeli-based online newspaper to which Schwartz has become a regular contributor.  “Yet the more I looked, the more I found,” he noted.
‘The Jewish tradition is largely about taking a concrete starting point – like an episode related in the Haggadah or the egg on the Seder plate – and finding more and more ways to think about it. The saying is that the Torah has seventy faces. I did not expect to ever get to seventy dimensions of time in Passover, but here I am so far, with one hundred and four…so far.”
While this year, Pesach has now passed.  I would encourage interested readers to peruse “About Time: 104 Dimensions of Time During Passover” and print out sections that you might consider introducing into your seders next year.
“My aspiration,” Schwartz writes on his webpage,  “would be for the book, in some form or other, to become a familiar companion to the Haggadah as we re-experience Passover every year, For some readers, it might help to make everything old seem new again.”
Schwartz published two other books of note last year.  In January, he spoke about the themes in “Re-Enlightening Canada:  A Legislative Program for promoting Open, Democratic and Rational policymaking” (available on Amazon) in a question and answer session at the Berney Theatre, with Ruth Ashrafi, Bnai Brith Canada Regional Director for Manitoba, in which he discussed the ills plaguing today’s universities and recommended some solutions.
“When I began my teaching career (at the University of Manitoba Faculty of Law) over 40 years ago,” universities were places which encouraged freedom of expression, open dialogue and diversity of opinion,” he recalls.  “That is no longer the case.  DEI (diversity, equity and inclusiveness) as it has been developed over the past few years is antithetical to traditional liberal values and is, in particular, hostile to Jews because Jews, within the DEI context, are considered White and White people are considered bad.
“For Jewish students and faculty members, the University of Manitoba has become a hostile environment.”
Schwartz’s grim conclusion is that “Woke” ideology has entirely conquered most universities  and  that universities are not capable of reforming themselves. The only way they will be restored to a public space where diverse opinions are welcome and freedom of expression again flourishes, he says, is through strong government actions – a recipe for which he outlines in “Re-enlightening Canada”.  
’The program,” he explains, “is intended to appeal to reasonable people across the political spectrum. It is a proposal for how people of good faith in democracies can “reason together.” “It is intended to be a moderate and practical response to the ideological excesses of our time.”
The multifaceted Schwartz’s third project – completed last year, was his contribution to the second edition of “Humanity in Doubt”, the reflections of his late father-in—law Philip Weiss, a Holocaust survivor who built a successful furniture manufacturing business here and became a leader in Holocaust education in the schools.
Weiss died in 2008 at the age of 85.
This new, updated edition includes a eulogy by Schwartz and an afterword written by Frances Winograd,  one of Weiss’s daughters: “Furnishing an Identity” – based on her Master’s thesis in Interior Design, which places Weiss’s career in design in the context of the Jewish contribution to modernism.
Schwartz co-edited this second edition with his daughter, Lainie (who work at Yad Vashem), and John Richthammer.

Danial Sprintz: Perseverance has led him to deal with challenges on his way to helming Camp Massad

By SIMONE COHEN SCOTT Last summer at the JNF Breakfast for Israel at Camp Massad, I met the camp’s executive director, Danial Sprintz. We had a lively conversation and before long I realized what an interesting fellow this was, and I wanted to share what I was learning with readers. It took until now for us to get together: Danial isn’t done with Camp Massad when summer ends, but lines up interesting events for his campers during the other seasons as well. His modus operandi is, in his own words, “All Jewish kids in Canada ought to have a meaningful experience in summertime, and touch base with each other in wintertime.” It is this attitude of his that struck me initially, and thrills me. Danial wants to instill Jewish values and love of Judaism in as many of the young community as he can possibly reach, regardless of how much or little each youngster is taught at home. What a wonderful idea: Rear a generation of leaders, steeped in Jewish values and tradition!

Was Danial raised in this kind of an atmosphere? Yes. His mother, a single parent, had spent time on a kibbutz, and wanted her two boys to know Hebrew. To emphasize what Danial was learning in the North End Jewish schools, when he was eight years old she sent him to Camp Massad. He was, he told me, the youngest registrant and he still remembers the efforts of the program director, who was Stuart Slayen, helping him become part of the group in spite of the age difference. This is where and when he fell in love will all the aspects of being a Jew: the Hebrew language; the State of Israel; and the Jewish community that he was becoming a part of, and which would form the matrix for his life from then on. It strikes me as a blessing indeed when a mom makes a decision in her child’s young life that sets him on a path to a later career choice that is both fulfilling and a benefit to a widespread community. This is an achievement in itself. But it wasn’t a straight line.

Danial returned summer after summer to Camp Massad, as a camper, then a counsellor, so by the time he graduated high school he was a senior counsellor. This led to his being in charge of counsellor training and leadership development. By 2003 he was assistant director. When the summer ended in 2003, he was invited to serve as BBYO (B’nai B’rith Youth Organization) regional director. Somehow at this point he squeezed in getting a B.A. in English and History, at the University of Winnipeg. In 2007, after playing a game of hockey, he collapsed, and it was discovered he had a brain tumour. The prognosis was not good. By this time he had become engaged, and he told his fiancé, Rebecca Lewis, to leave him and move on with her life. She said no, she would stay with him. He decided to “stay” too, (his word), gave up all medication, and recovered! Some would say “a miraculous recovery”. Perhaps love and faith and will had something to do with it too.

At this point Rebecca, who was studying Chinese medicine, was accepted into a school in Victoria. Danial went along -perhaps a sort of convalescence. After a time of working at various jobs, he discovered Congregation Emanu-el, the oldest synagogue in continuous operation in Canada. Quoting from Danial’s Book of Life entry*: “The rabbi was away, the building was in disrepair, and programs were non-existent. Danial decided they needed him! At the next board meeting, he made a presentation and was promptly hired. For the next two years he worked tirelessly to grow membership, raise funds, restore the building, and develop programs.” It appears that while Rebecca was getting her doctorate in Chinese Medicine, Danial was developing synagogue programs, High Holy day services and activities, encouraging youth participation, inviting students home for Shabbat dinners. Temple Emanu-el’s website tells us it’s still in operation.

The conversation I had with Danial when we first met was mainly about the epiphany-like experience the brush with death had been for him. It was in evaluating that chapter of his life that he realized what mattered most to him was not a successful career in terms of salary or lifestyle, but in instilling the values that he treasured – yes: Jewish values – into the youth of today who will become the leaders of tomorrow. In other words: to make a difference, but what a difference! To that end, in 2010, Danial applied for and was hired as executive director of guess where? Camp Massad! The couple, now married, returned to Winnipeg. A lovely article by Rebeca Kuropatwa in the Jewish Post & News dated February 9, 2011 is titled: “Camp Massad’s Dynamic, New Leader Breathes New Life into Camp Scene”. Danial was very excited and ambitious to put into effect everything he had learned from his various experiences since leaving the camp in 2003.

And that brings us to now, 14 years later. Danial has implemented most of the envisioned projects mentioned in the Kuropatwa article, but he’s not resting on his laurels, as they say. His vision has widened. He sees Camp Massad as an example to communities everywhere, summer camps teaching youth everywhere of the values and strengths of their own ethnic and religious traditions, sharing and interacting with each other in creative and productive ways. As for his wife, Dr. Rebecca Sprintz now owns Family Acupuncture Wellness Clinic on Corydon Avenue, whose website says: “Her passion has always been helping people achieve greater health and happiness through life’s challenges.” The couple have two children, Sage and Cole, both Massadniks.

*(Danial gave me a copy of his entry in the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba’s Book of Life, which was written by his early program director, as mentioned, Stuart Slayen. In it I found this tidbit: Danial’s grandfather Al Spritz, a child immigrant from Romania, played clarinet and sax in his own band, the house band at Club Morocco. Don’t you love it when jazz turns up unexpectedly? And that was a great jazz era!)

New documentary about David Matas chronicles his long career as a tireless advocate for human rights

By BERNIE BELLAN David Matas has achieved world-wide recognition for his life-long work advocating on behalf of repressed minorities throughout the world. Yet, as the same time as he is probably one of the most famous – and successful individuals working in the area of human rights, his unassuming and low key style would often belie the success he has achieved.
Now, in a new documentary film, titled “The Justice Hunter,” written and produced by Israeli-born Winnipegger Yolanda Papini-Pollock (who, many readers may also know is the founder and driving force behind the advocacy group, Winnipeg Friends of Israel), viewers are given the opportunity to see Matas’s life chronicled in a very interesting – and often revealing manner.
Papini-Pollock has produced other films centering around the subject of human rights, including “Never Again: A Broken Promise,” which drew upon the experiences of survivors of four different genocides (the Holocaust, Rwandan, Indigenous and Yazidi genocides); “Get Over It: A Path to Healing,” about the health crisis facing Canada’s Indigenous communities; and ‘Painful Truth: The Falun Gong Genocide,” which tells the story of the Chinese government’s horrible record of persecution – and often, execution of practitioners of Falun Gong. Stemming from Papini-Pollock’s documentary about the persecution of practitioners of Falun Gong, she developed a particular interest in telling David Mata’s story in some detail, since no one has done more to fight antisemitism and to bring to light China’s abysmal record of persecution of the Falun Gong than David Matas.
“The Justice Hunter,” however, conveys Papini-Pollock’s growth as a documentary movie-maker. Whereas “A Broken Promise” relied primarily upon interviews with four different subjects, “The Justice Hunter” uses a much faster-paced style of movie-making. Interspersing short snippets of interviews with such individuals whose lives have become interconnected with David Matas over the years, such as lawyer and former Canadian Minister of External Affairs Irwin Cotler, the film also features the voice of David Matas himself offering observations about various aspects of his career. As well, the film also includes footage showing in some detail how the Chinese government have been complicit in the persecution of the Falun Gong, along with an interesting segment explaining how Israelis had become prime recipients of organs harvested from executed Falun Gong members until that practice was exposed by Matas and he late David Kilgour, former Member of Parliament, in a book titled “Bloody Harvest,” which was published in 2005.

The film is narrated by Leah Ross, a former lawyer and student of Matas’s herself – now a music educator with the Winnipeg School Division. Ross offers her own observations about Matas’s career and how inspiring he has been to law students such as herself. In one touching scene, a group of friends gather to celebrate Matas’s 80th birthday. As the attendees at the party sing “Happy birthday,” Matas recalls the famous opening line of Charles Dickens’ “A Tale of Two Cities”: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,” which, he suggests, is a fitting description of his career fighting for human rights around the world.
One especially interesting insight that Matas offers at one point is how he has been able to remain somewhat detached from all the many legal battles in which he has been immersed. He notes, for instance, that while he was subject to occasional antisemitism growing up in north end Winnipeg, his family did not experience the Holocaust, and thus, he did not carry any personal baggage when he began to invest time into dealing with others who had been undergoing persecution.
In addition to focusing on Matas’s long battle of behalf of Falun Gong practitioners, in which he worked together with David Kilgour, to expose the horrible Chinese government practice of executing Falon Gong prisoners so that their organs could be harvested, the film also depicts other battles Matas has waged, on behalf of Wiegers in China (who are Muslim), and Tamils (in Sri Lanka).
Late in the film, we meet Hannah Taylor, another young Winnipeg lawyer, who has also been inspired to work with Matas, helping him to research and prepare briefs for various international bodies around the world. (Although the film doesn’t mention it, Taylor herself achieved quite some renown when, as a very young girl here, she started something called “The Ladybug Foundation,” to help Winnipeggers experiencing homelessness.)
But perhaps as well known as Matas’ work on behalf of repressed minorities in all areas of the globe has been Matas’s efforts to combat antisemitism. As legal counsel for B’nai Brith Canada, Matas’s work investigating Nazi war criminals in Canada is also explored in the film. Snippets of interviews with Michael Mostyn, Chief Executive Officer of B’nai Brith Canada, and Alan Yusim, former Midwest Regional Representative for B’nai Brith Canada, reveal just how extraordinary Matas’s contribution to fighting antisemitism in Canada has been for many years now.

I asked Yolanda Papini-Pollock what led her to want to make a film about David Matas’s career?
She answered: “The idea for this film came from Professor Emeritus Maria Cheung, with whom I previously collaborated on Painful Truth: The Falun Gong Genocide. In that project, we interviewed David Matas about his groundbreaking research into the forced organ harvesting of Falun Gong practitioners in China. The Falun Gong community deeply appreciated David’s tireless efforts to expose these atrocities and wanted to create a tribute to honour him. Professor Cheung along with JadeRose Film and TV productions approached me with the idea, and I was delighted to take it on, as I greatly value David’s work in human rights and his contributions to not only the Jewish but also to communities across Canada and around the world.”
Papini-Pollock says it took her about a year to make the film.
I asked her though, where it might be seen?
She says “B’nai Brith Canada is planning a screening on December 17 in Winnipeg to honor David Matas’ contributions as their senior legal counsel. They also intend to host a screening in Ottawa in February.” The film can also be viewed at https://www.ntdfilms.com/the-justice-hunter/
(I would think “The Justice Hunter” would fit well into the program schedule of a network such as Vision TV, which I’ve contacted to suggest it ought to consider airing the film).
In addition to the film, “The Justice Hunter,” Papini-Pollock has also produced a picture book by the same name, intended for grade school children. She explains that “The idea for the book came to me during the production of the film. As I learned more about David, I felt it was important to share his story with young children as well. David expressed a desire for the film to inspire others to take up human rights work, and I realized that introducing his story to children could be impactful. The challenge, however, was to present his work in an age-appropriate way—something that could inspire without overwhelming or frightening young readers. Crafting a story that balanced these elements was both a struggle and a rewarding experience.”
Papini-Pollock adds that “The book is now available for purchase on various digital platforms, including Amazon, Indigo, and Barnes & Noble, in both soft cover and digital formats. Christine Melnick from Sharing the Magic of Literacy has shown interest in distributing it to schools and remote communities.”

New Hanukkah stamp shines light on unique artifact recovered from Nazi Germany

The latest stamp from Canada Post features a 19th-century hanukkiyah now housed in Montréal museum
 
MONTRÉAL – Canada Post is unveiling its latest stamp, which commemorates the annual Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, also known as the “Festival of Lights.”
 
This year’s Hanukkah stamp features an ornate 19th-century hanukkiyah (also referred to as a menorah) with a remarkable past. Originally created in Poland, the silver-plated object is believed to have been rescued from a burning synagogue in Germany in November 1938 – around the time when widespread violence erupted in Nazi-occupied territories.
 
“In the aftermath of World War II, military authorities recovered a vast amount of Jewish cultural and religious items,” explains Louis Charbonneau of the Aron Museum at Montréal’s Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom, which houses the spectacular menorah featured on the stamp. It was one of a number donated to the museum after the Second World War as part of the effort to redistribute recovered cultural and religious items to Israel and to Jewish communities around the world.
 
The hanukkiyah – holding eight candles and a ninth “helper” candle or shamash used to light the others – is unique for its striking sculpture of a peacock, symbolizing the faith and resilience that lie at the heart of Hanukkah.
 
Canada Post is honoured to feature this historic artifact, shining a light on an important piece of history. Along with Hanukkah, Canada Post is proud to commemorate popular holidays for several faiths celebrated by Canadians across the country, including Christmas, Diwali and Eid.
 
About the stamp
The Hanukkah stamp depicts a peacock-themed hanukkiyah standing 31.7 cm high, which was crafted by an unknown artist in 19th-century Poland. The stamp issue, designed by Subplot Design Inc. and printed by Colour Innovations, includes a booklet of six Permanent™ domestic rate stamps and an Official First Day Cover cancelled in Westmount, Quebec.
