Olympics-Sailing-Israel Dominates in Windsurfing as Italy’s Maggetti Wins Women’s Gold

Israel’s Tom Reuveny claimed Olympic gold in the men’s windsurfing on Saturday, with the country’s Sharon Kantor snatching silver in the women’s event behind Marta Maggetti after the Italian pulled off a strategic masterstroke.
The gold and silver represent the best ever result in Olympic sailing for Israel, who have a history of medals in windsurfing at previous Games.
Reuveny, who performed an acrobatic leap on his iQFOiL after crossing the line, before crashing backwards into the water, said it was amazing to have won both medals.
“She (Kantor) managed to keep with the pressure and deliver a silver medal, which was amazing and now with my gold I think it couldn’t be better for our country,” Reuveny told Reuters, adding that he was “super proud” of his team mate.
The men had been recalled after a false start to the race, having to regroup for a restart amid white-crested waves and a bigger breeze than there had been for the rest of the event.
“I thought I was over and I was starting to panic but then I realized that everyone was over,” Reuveny said, adding that he had learned from it and attacked the second start harder.
Australia’s Grae Morris took the men’s silver and Luuc van Opzeeland of the Netherlands won bronze.
Morris told Reuters it had been the toughest race of his life.
“You can’t compare it to anything, it’s awesome. I’m just super happy that I get to share this moment with my family and everyone who helped me,” he said.
Earlier, Maggetti, 28, pumped her fist as she crossed the line and then leapt into the Mediterranean.
The Italian’s breakaway in the third leg proved decisive, giving her the lead from Britain’s Emma Wilson, who had dominated the early stages of the race, during which their foiling boards flew over the sea at more than 20 knots.
Maggetti swam over to her rivals to hug them in the water as the result began to register. She was greeted back on the beach with an Italian flag and ran over to embrace friends and family.
For Wilson, who had dominated the fleet during the qualifying stages but crossed the line some way behind her rivals to land bronze, there were tears.
The Briton, 25 also finished third in Tokyo.
Her tears were interspersed with occasional smiles, as she was hugged by family and friends back on the Marseille beach.

Iran Says Hamas Leader Haniyeh Was Killed by Short-Range Projectile

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said on Saturday that Palestinian terror group Hamas’ leader Ismail Haniyeh was slain in Tehran by a short-range projectile with a warhead of about 7 kg, and vowed severe revenge.
Wednesday’s assassination has aroused fears of direct conflict between Tehran and its arch-enemy Israel in a region shaken by Israel’s war in Gaza and a worsening conflict in Lebanon.
Revenge for the killing of the Hamas leader will be “severe and at an appropriate time, place, and manner,” the Guards’ statement added, blaming the “terrorist Zionist regime” of Israel for his death.
Iran and Hamas have accused Israel of carrying out the strike that killed Haniyeh hours after he attended the inauguration of Iran’s new president.
The New York Times, citing unnamed sources, reported that the explosion which killed Haniyeh was a bomb that was covertly smuggled into the guesthouse where he was staying in Tehran two months ago.
Israeli officials have not claimed responsibility.
The statement by the elite Guards force also accused the “criminal US government” of supporting the attack which Iranian media said was in a northern suburb of Tehran.
Haniyeh was buried on Friday in Qatar, where he was based.

Brandeis Center Calls Title VI Settlement with North Carolina State a ‘Step Forward’

JNS.org – The Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law announced a settlement with the school on Thursday, following an early mediation process through the US Department of Education to address a complaint about campus antisemitism.
The student who filed the complaint reported incidents of harassment the university failed to address, including a tunnel filled with swastikas and someone screaming at her “Death to Jews! Death to Zionists!”
Brandeis reported that the academic institution will implement a non-discrimination policy aligning with the 2019 Executive Order 13899 and North Carolina’s House Bill 942 (also known as the Shalom Act) which utilizes the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism.
North Carolina State will also revise training for students and staff, and conduct a campus survey to assess the depth of anti-Jewish sentiment.
Kenneth L. Marcus, founder and chairman of the Brandeis Center, called the settlement “a significant step forward in our efforts to combat antisemitism on college campuses.” He said the agreement “paves the way for meaningful change on both NCSU’s campus and on college campuses throughout the country.”
Robin Pick, senior counsel at the Brandeis Center, stated that “by committing to combat antisemitism in accordance with Executive Order 13899 and North Carolina House Bill 942, which apply to training, education, recognizing, identifying and combating antisemitic hate and discrimination, NC State has the opportunity to be a leader and a model for other universities in the fight against antisemitism.”

Hezbollah Reportedly Evacuates Command Center from South Beirut

i24 News – The Shiite jihadists of Hezbollah began evacuating headquarters and military equipment from the Dahieh district in Beirut amid fears of escalating war with Israel, Arabic media reported on Friday.
The reports also claimed that the terror militia advised residents living in buildings housing senior terror chiefs, as well as those in nearby buildings, to relocate to “safer locales.”
