Pnina Simkin bat mitzvah held in Los Angeles December 16
On Saturday, December 16, Pnina Simkin, the daughter of Sam and Rachel Simkin, and sister to Jonah and Vered Simkin, celebrated her bat mitzvah at IKAR in Los Angeles. (IKAR is a spiritual community founded 19 years ago that seeks to broaden its reach among Jews of all orientations, including disaffected Jews. According to its website it seeks to understand Judaism as more than a “religious and spiritual practice.”)
Pnina’s connections to Winnipeg are numerous: Two of her grandparents are Carey (née Lavitt) and Bernie Simkin, both former Winnipeggers. On her grandmother Cary’s side, her great-grandparents were Sylvia and Joseph Lavitt. On her grandfather Bernie’s side her great-grandparents were Fanny and Abe Simkin.
Interestingly, having a good voice runs through the Simkin family. Pnina’s great-grandfather, Abe, had a rich singing voice and was actually an accomplished boy cantor in the Talmud Torah choir. Her grandfather Bernie and her uncles Gary and Murray were also members of Cantor Brownstone’s choir. And another Sam Simkin (her grandfather’s cousin) was a longtime soloist in Cantor Brownstone’s choir who also led high holiday services for years here. (By the way, Pnina’s father, Sam, is named after his mother Cary’s maternal grandfather, Sam Gunn.)
Not only did Pnina chant the maftir and haftorah, she also took time to study not only the parsha this past week, “Mikeitz,” but the parshas for the preceding week and for next week. Thus, her “Dvar Torah” was put into a much wider context than simply focusing on this week’s parsha. The entire bat mitzvah was live streamed – and can be viewed on Youtube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VtNnjvYrcos

A New Era of Opportunity: Sheba Medical Center Joins Forces with Druze Community to Drive Innovation
One Million Shekels In Funding and Mentorship Awarded to Top Startup Ideas
Ramat Gan, Israel – November 18, 2024 – In a milestone step toward building a new relationship, Sheba Medical Center‘s leadership met with Druze community leaders one year ago to explore opportunities for collaboration. This initial dialogue, held just one month before the onset of the war, led to the creation of a unique startup initiative.
Launched this month in partnership with Sheba Impact, ARC Innovation and the nonprofit organization Ofakim LaAtid (“Future Horizons”), the new program aims to support young Druze entrepreneurs and address the critical challenge of securing funding. This collaboration reflects the hospital’s commitment to fostering connections with the Druze community and empowering its next generation of innovators.
“There are many fantastic ideas within the Druze community, but securing funding is one of the biggest challenges our young entrepreneurs face,” said Amir Hassoun, Director of Administration at Sheba’s Rehabilitation Hospital and a proud member of the Druze community who is spearheading the initiative. “We are encouraging our youth to pursue their vision. This is more than just a program; it is an investment in the future of our community and our country. We are so proud of these young innovators and grateful for the opportunity to support their journey.”
The Druze community, numbering around 150,000, makes up about 1.6% of Israel’s population. Many reside in the north, where they have faced the challenges of war, including rocket fire and disruptions to daily life. Druze citizens actively contribute to the country, serving in the military and putting their lives at risk for Israel’s security.
Lieutenant Colonel As’ad Subah, founder of Ofakim LaAtid said, “We are deeply committed to fostering leadership among young people in the Druze community. Our association, founded by Druze military officers, was created to support the next generation. That’s why we are proud to partner on this project with Sheba and philanthropic business leaders. This initiative is not only a great honor but also an important step toward advancing the Druze community.”
The startup initiative invited budding entrepreneurs from the Druze community to submit their innovations, resulting in 20 unique submissions. A panel of Sheba representatives and private investors selected five finalists who presented their projects in a “pitch-off” event, with a total of one million shekels in prizes awarded. The top honor was awarded to the founders of AIBIRD, a company developing an artificial intelligence platform to enhance remote and hybrid learning.
AIBIRD‘s technology analyzes students’ expressions and emotions while they engage with online videos and learning materials, using this data to gauge attention and track progress for personalized guidance. The company’s founder was inspired by his own child who had trouble remaining engaged in distance learning. The company will receive a 300,000 shekel investment to further develop and test its product, along with ongoing mentorship from Sheba’s network.
Speaking on the initiative, Israeli businessman and philanthropist Ofer Kerzner, said, “As an Israeli citizen who loves my country, I am honored to contribute. The Druze are our partners in challenging times; they have paid with their blood. This is not political – this is a chance to show our respect and love for one another, to build our country together. We want to be brothers in life, not only brothers in death.”
The runner-up was Swift, a father-daughter team that developed a unique and immediate water heating solution that conserves energy. The device attaches to the solar water heater and can be used in private homes, hotels, hospitals and more. Other finalists included PreIn, an AI-powered thermal scanning company focused on sports medicine; AgriEye, an AI solution for early detection and disease prediction in apple trees; and MultiKol, a company developing voice analytics for security and identification applications.
Other investor participants included tech entrepreneur Ron Zukerman, Managing Partner of ARYO Ventures, Ami Lidor, Managing Director of Lidorr Elements, Moti Kirshenbaum, entrepreneur and owner of the assisted living network Mediterranean Towers, and Eran Gorev, Partner and President of Israel at Francisco Partners.
The judging panel included Sami Lachiani, head of the economic development of minorities department of the Prime Minister’s Office, Udi Shani, Investor and partner at Zuckerman Fund, and Avner Halperin, CEO of Sheba Impact. More than 100 young volunteers from the nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering young leadership in Israel’s Druze community, Ofakim LaAtid (“Future Horizons”), attended the event.
Professor Arnon Afek, Associate Director General and Acting Director of Sheba General Hospital, addressed the audience and reflected positively on his personal army experience alongside his Jewish and Druze comrades. He said, “This is just the beginning. We’re bringing together passionate, young Zionist leaders who want to help shape a better future for our country. People ask me all the time how I stay so optimistic – and it’s because I see this next generation. They’re driven, capable, and, in many ways, they’re already better than we were.”
All five finalists will receive guidance and mentorship, connecting them with experienced professionals in the hospital’s network. This program, the first of several planned events, not only helps launch promising startups but also reinforces the strong relationship between the hospital and the Druze community—one built on respect, shared values, and a commitment to a brighter future for all of Israel.

The legal landscape of online gambling in Canada: What you need to know
Online gambling has become a popular pastime in Canada, offering players a convenient way to enjoy games of chance and skill from the comfort of their homes. However, the legal framework surrounding online casinos in Canada can be complex and often misunderstood. Understanding the laws that govern online gambling is essential for both new and experienced players to ensure they engage with the industry safely and responsibly.
This article will explore the key aspects of Canada’s online gambling regulations, discuss the payment methods accepted by platforms, and guide you to the top online casinos in Canada for a secure and enjoyable experience.
Online gambling regulations in Canada
Canada’s legal landscape for online gambling operates at both federal and provincial levels, creating a unique and sometimes confusing framework. At the federal level, the Criminal Code of Canada outlines the legality of gambling activities, stating that unlicensed gambling operations are prohibited. However, the provinces have the authority to regulate and license gambling activities within their jurisdictions.
Several provinces, such as Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia, have established their own online gambling platforms. These provincially operated websites, like Ontario’s iGaming Ontario or British Columbia’s PlayNow, are fully licensed and adhere to strict regulatory standards. They offer players a secure and legal way to access a wide range of games, including slots, poker, and sports betting.
Additionally, Canadian players can access offshore online casinos, as the laws do not explicitly prohibit individuals from gambling on international platforms. Many of these platforms welcome Canadian players and adhere to regulations from reputable jurisdictions such as Malta or Gibraltar, ensuring a safe and fair gaming environment.
The role of licensing and regulation
When choosing an online casino in Canada, it’s essential to verify the platform’s licensing and regulatory credentials. A licensed casino is subject to strict oversight, ensuring that games are fair, transactions are secure, and player data is protected. Trusted regulatory bodies, such as the Malta Gaming Authority or the UK Gambling Commission, provide certifications that indicate the casino operates ethically.
In Canada, provincially operated casinos are the most reliable for players seeking full compliance with local laws. However, for those exploring offshore options, it’s critical to check for licensing information on the casino’s website and confirm its legitimacy through the regulatory body’s official portal.
Payment methods accepted by Canadian online casinos
Payment methods are a vital aspect of the online gambling experience, as they determine how players deposit funds and withdraw winnings securely. Most Canadian online casinos offer a variety of options, including credit and debit cards, bank transfers, and e-wallets. Among these, PayPal stands out as one of the most popular and trusted methods.
PayPal’s strong reputation for security and ease of use makes it a preferred choice for many Canadian players. It allows for quick transactions without the need to share sensitive banking information with the casino, enhancing privacy and reducing the risk of fraud. Additionally, PayPal’s buyer protection policies provide an extra layer of confidence for users.
For those interested in exploring casinos that accept PayPal, you can find detailed insights and recommendations on the top online casinos in Canada, ensuring a seamless and secure payment experience.
The importance of responsible gambling
Regardless of the legal and operational aspects, responsible gambling is crucial to ensuring a positive gaming experience. Many Canadian online casinos offer tools and resources to help players manage their gambling habits. These include deposit limits, self-exclusion options, and access to support organizations such as ConnexOntario and the Responsible Gambling Council.
Players should always gamble within their means and avoid chasing losses. Understanding the risks associated with online gambling and setting clear boundaries can help maintain a healthy balance between entertainment and responsibility.
