MAVIS RABKIN May 15, 1926 – January 29, 2023

With deep sadness, but much love and gratitude for her long, full and well-lived life, the family of Mavis Rabkin announces her peaceful passing on Sunday, January 29, 2023 surrounded by all her children.
Cherishing their loving memories are Tammy, Jack (Linda), Debbie (Robert), her grandchildren: Mark, Melissa, Mitchell and Aaron, and nieces and nephews in Canada, USA and Israel.
She was predeceased by the love of her life, Mayer, in 2017, her parents: Malka and Mendel Chaikin, siblings: Clara, Thelma, Ben (Marion), Osher (Irene), in-laws: Jacob and Anna Rabkin.
Mavis was born in Yorkton, SK, grew up in Grandview MB, attended St. John’s Tech and the U of M in Winnipeg. She met Mayer, a charming WWII vet and fellow U of M student. They were married in 1950. Their married life was happily lived in Portage la Prairie, on Queen Ave., where she was a loving and devoted wife and mother. She was deeply involved in all aspects of the community.
Small in stature, but feisty, with boundless energy and a huge smile, she actively participated in her synagogue, Hadassah, volunteer work, golf, curling, skating, bridge, bowling, gardening and more. A skilled hostess with extraordinary cooking and baking talents always found her family, extended family and friends gathered around her table for holidays and family celebrations. Throughout all of this she worked alongside Mayer in the store.
She and Mayer moved to Winnipeg in 1988 where she maintained an active life style. They enjoyed many adventures over the years, including family summers at Clear Lake, numberous family road trips, winters in Palm Springs, Florida, Arizona and Hawaii, and trips to Israel and Spain.
Services were held Wednesday, February 1, 2023 at the Chesed Shel Emes officiated by Rabbi A. Mass. Pallbearers were Jack, Mark, Mitchell, Melissa Rabkin, Aaron and Robert Witzke.
The family thanks the Simkin Centre, where she resided the past few years, for their care and attention.
